Liz Meriwether Adapting Britney Spears' Memoir for the Big Screen
Deadline
Four-time Emmy nominee Liz Meriwether has been tasked with writing the screenplay based on Britney Spears' memoir, "The Woman in Me." The project, produced by Marc Platt at Universal and directed by Jon M. Chu, saw the studio acquire the rights last August 2024. Meriwether is penning the first draft of the story that chronicles Spears' tumultuous career, which launched her from McComb, Mississippi, to become a bestselling pop artist with hits like "...Baby One More Time," "Toxic," and "Oops!... I Did It Again!"
"The Woman in Me" has sold over 6 million copies, making it the fastest-selling memoir in Simon & Schuster's history. Spears signed a $15 million book deal in 2022. The artist, who has one Grammy Award, boasts nearly 150 million records sold worldwide and 70 million albums, singles, and song sales in the U.S. alone.
Meriwether is known as the creator of Fox's hit series "New Girl," which features stars like Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simon. Additionally, she is a co-creator of FX's limited series "Dying for Sex," which earned nominations in the limited series and writing categories at the 2025 Emmy Awards. Hulu's limited series "The Dropout" was also nominated for Outstanding Limited/Anthology Series in 2022.
Universal has not commented on Meriwether's involvement in the "The Woman in Me" project. This adaptation aims to shed light on Britney Spears' life and career, offering a significant experience for fans and new viewers alike.
