David Thomson is a respected British author known for his works on cinema. As the author of over 40 books, Thomson has been described by the Los Angeles Times as "undoubtedly the greatest living film historian"; the New York Times has referred to him as "one of the most passionate film lovers of the last fifty years." Thomson's works are noted for often providing more enjoyment than the experience in cinema halls.

Thomson is best known for his monumental work, "A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema," published in 1975 and updated and reprinted five times. In this book, he covers a wide range of figures in film history, from famous names like Cary Grant and Julia Roberts to behind-the-scenes masters like graphic artist Saul Bass and film editor Walter Murch. Thomson presents the lives of these individuals not only with objective data but also enriched with thought-provoking and often contrasting viewpoints.

A survey conducted by THR in 2023 selected "The Biographical Dictionary" as one of the top 100 cinema books of all time. Additionally, in a poll organized by Sight and Sound in 2010, this work was determined to be the best cinema book. Renowned film critic Roger Ebert noted that the book "does the best job of capturing the essence of its hundreds of subjects in the fewest words." Award-winning author Geoff Dyer described the work as "an indispensable book about cinema and one of the most absurdly ambitious literary achievements of our time."

While no further information has been provided about Thomson's new book, it is certain that he will continue to be recognized for his in-depth analyses and critiques of the film world. With his contributions to film history and critical perspective, Thomson's works will remain an essential resource for cinema enthusiasts.
