After achieving great success with the Barbie film starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig, Mattel decided to revive one of the iconic heroes of the '80s, He-Man. He-Man was known from the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, which was a favorite among children in the '80s. Now, the live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe, featuring Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, aka He-Man, has hit theaters. However, according to box office numbers, the film failed to recapture the magic of the beloved animated series.
The film follows Prince Adam as he finds the legendary Sword of Power after being trapped on Earth for 15 years, and then returns to Eternia to defeat the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto). Alongside Jared Leto, notable actors such as Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Duncan (Man-At-Arms), and Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn are part of the cast. However, this unique action-adventure film has caused divisions among critics and fans; it received a 68% approval rating from critics and 86% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film grossed only $112 million against a budget of approximately $200 million worldwide, failing to generate the excitement that Mattel hoped for, similar to Barbie. This indicates that He-Man's rebirth did not create the expected impact. However, for fans who have a nostalgic connection, this film can be seen as an effort to revive the spirit of the '80s. Mattel's projects like this stand out as significant steps in introducing iconic characters from the past to new generations.
