David Chase, the creator of ‘The Sopranos’, met with press representatives at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) held in the Czech Republic. In this meeting, which took place a day before the expanded KVIFF Industry Days program, the seven-time Emmy winner Chase candidly discussed both his past works and the current state of the industry.

Of course, a lot of discussion centered around ‘The Sopranos’. However, Chase also provided insights about his new project at HBO. Announced in the fall, this project aims to adapt John Lisle’s nonfiction book titled "Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA and the Tragedy of MKULTRA" into a limited series. This drama project, titled "Project: MKUltra", will be Chase’s first HBO work following his film before ‘The Sopranos’ if it turns into a series.

Chase noted that the project is still in the story phase and shared the main elements of the narrative: “LSD was invented and developed in Switzerland. The CIA spent millions of dollars to weaponize it,” he said. “Perhaps they thought that people would go insane without needing to be shot in war. This was something they presented as an excuse, but it wasn’t what they actually cared about. There was a very large and famous program in the US where LSD was tested on people, called MKUltra.” Chase also added that Charles Manson may have likely taken LSD as well.

HBO describes "Project: MKUltra" as “a dramatic thriller revolving around the famous chemist and spy Sidney Gottlieb, who ran the CIA's MKUltra psychedelic program.” This new project is generating significant interest in both David Chase’s career and the television world.
