Chilean renowned director Valeria Sarmiento is bidding farewell to her directing career with the film titled "Behind the Rain." The film will have its world premiere at the prestigious Crystal Globe Competition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Sarmiento has directed over 30 feature films and has won awards at major festivals like San Sebastián for addressing the status of women in a patriarchal culture. This final work serves as a summary of Sarmiento's career spanning over 50 years and includes many collaborations with the famous Chilean director Raúl Ruiz.

"Behind the Rain" follows the story of psychology professor Sofia (Paula Prado). As the young woman prepares to return to her hometown after completing her graduate studies, the body of a young girl is discovered there. This event brings Sofia's traumatic memories from the past to the surface, leading her into a painful process of self-reflection. The film once again highlights the themes of memory and trauma that Sarmiento has explored in depth.

In an interview with Variety, Sarmiento explained how the initial idea for the film came about. Along with producer Chamila Rodríguez, she mentioned discussing painful childhood experiences while mixing Ruiz's film "The Tango of the Widower and Its Distorting Mirror." Sarmiento stated that she had a screenplay dealing with this theme and that they had tried it previously in Lisbon, the United Kingdom, and Locarno. When Rodríguez suggested shooting this project in Chile, it opened a new door for Sarmiento.

This film will be recorded as an important legacy that Sarmiento leaves in the world of cinema and will offer audiences a profound emotional experience. Marking the end of the director's career, this work also sheds light on the challenges faced by women and societal traumas.
