Star Trek fans often point out that one of the most significant features that sets this long-running sci-fi series apart from others is its greater focus on scientific exploration. However, in every production within the Trek universe, Starfleet ships engage in conflicts with opposing forces, whether they be aliens from another galaxy or their own officers. This has led to many iconic moments, from the deadly chase in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan to the opening battle of Star Trek: Discovery. Yet, the most iconic Star Trek battle has profoundly shaken fans and redefined the series.

This battle is at the heart of the two-part story titled "The Best of Both Worlds" from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The malevolent cybernetic entity Borg completely takes over a colony, drawing the attention of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D. After assimilating Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Starfleet engages in a confrontation with a Borg cube near the Wolf 359 star system. The ensuing battle is catastrophic; no ship at Wolf 359 can withstand the Borg's firepower or their ability to adapt to attacks. This battle will mark the beginning of one of Star Trek's finest series.

While the "The Best of Both Worlds" episode does not fully depict the Battle of Wolf 359, it emphasizes the horrific situation Starfleet faces. As the Enterprise-D passes through a massive field filled with shattered starships, it reveals the horrors of this battle. The pilot episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, titled "Emissary," revisits this battle, taking events to a more tragic level. Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) finds himself on the U.S.S. Saratoga, which is destroyed by the Borg; while he manages to save his son Jake, his wife Jennifer becomes one of Saratoga's victims. Deep Space Nine effectively presents the terror represented by the Borg in its first episode and highlights Sisko's struggle to overcome his anger towards Picard after Wolf 359.

Sisko is not one of the only survivors of Wolf 359, nor is he the only Starfleet officer harboring resentment towards Picard. In the final season of Star Trek: Picard, Picard frequently clashes with U.S.S. Titan's captain Liam Shaw (Todd Stashwick). In the episode "No Win Scenario," Shaw reveals that he participated in the battle at Wolf 359 and that his commander ensured his survival by placing him in a shuttle just before his ship was destroyed. The Next Generation will also revisit this battle...
