Why Was Heated Rivalry Not Nominated for the Emmy Awards?

The nominees for the 78th Emmy Awards were announced recently, sparking discussions about which shows deserved nominations and which were overlooked. One of the most notable omissions was Heated Rivalry, a series that made a significant impact upon its release last year, becoming one of HBO Max's most-watched shows. However, the reason it was not nominated in any category has become a topic of curiosity.
The answer lies in a simple and technical detail. According to the rules of the Emmy Awards, a television series from another country cannot be nominated unless it has been co-produced financially and creatively for U.S. television. While Heated Rivalry has gained popularity thanks to HBO Max, it was actually created for Crave, a streaming service in Canada. This situation sharply contrasts with Netflix's adaptation of Lord of the Flies, produced by a British company owned by Sony Pictures Television. The fact that Heated Rivalry was produced in Canada means it cannot achieve Emmy nomination. However, fans need not worry, as the series continues to compete for other awards.
Although Heated Rivalry cannot compete at the Emmy Awards, this does not prevent it from participating in other competitions. Earlier this year, the series achieved great success by winning 16 awards at the 2026 Canadian Screen Awards. Additionally, it won the Best New TV Series award at the 37th GLAAD Media Awards, a significant victory for Heated Rivalry that highlights LGBTQ+ media. The lack of Emmy nominations is not an issue for Heated Rivalry, as the series continues to achieve great success in other competitions.
The international awards won by Heated Rivalry remind us that the Emmys are not everything for a television series. Critically acclaimed shows often shine in awards like the Critics' Choice Television Awards, and of course, the Golden Globe Awards are also available. Furthermore, Heated Rivalry has the chance to compete at the International Emmy Awards later this year, where it will face off against Hulu's standout series Rivals in the Best Drama Series category. If Heated Rivalry continues to succeed in the award season outside of the Emmys, it could attract more viewers, which is a positive development, as the series has been renewed for a second season.
