George Lucas's L.A. Museum to Offer Free Access to Neighbors
The Hollywood Reporter
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles will open to the public on September 22 and has announced that it will provide free annual passes to its closest neighbors as a preview. The long-awaited $1 billion, 300,000 square foot cultural institution by George Lucas and his partner Mellody Hobson is notable for its futuristic design made possible by the Star Wars fortune. The museum will offer a rich experience with over 1,300 exhibited items and an 11-acre landscaped area on its campus.
The museum's CEO, Tracey Bates, explained the purpose of the pass program, stating, "We wanted to ensure that the neighbors who have been watching the museum's construction for the past eight years are the first to enter." This program allows holders to reserve two tickets. This area, located in the 90037 zip code, has a population of over 17,000 households, predominantly Hispanic and African American. A quarter of this population lives below the poverty line.
The Lucas Museum is situated in Exposition Park, along with other significant structures like the California Science Center and the L.A. County Natural History Museum, at the northern border of the 90037 zip code. Renowned landscape designer Mia Lehrer is designing the museum's gardens, complementing Ma Yansong's otherworldly architecture. Bates emphasized their connection to the local community, stating, "Our gardens and public spaces are now their backyard."
The museum's collection includes the original Lucasfilm archives that Lucas retained after selling to Disney for $4 billion in 2012. The collection houses works by artists such as Norman Rockwell, Jack Kirby, and Robert, aiming to provide visitors with a rich artistic experience.
