The Hollywood Reporter
Christopher Nolan spoke highly of the recent standout horror films 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms'. In an interview with The Telegraph, while promoting his upcoming epic film 'The Odyssey', he highlighted the impact these films have on young audiences. Nolan emphasized that the interest of young people in cinema and the presence of new voices in the industry are steadily increasing.
Nolan pointed to the producers of 'Obsession' and 'Backrooms', Curry Barker and Kane Parsons, as examples, stating that cinema is moving in the right direction. 'Obsession' was released on May 15 and grossed over $400 million worldwide against its budget of $750,000. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, it became the highest-grossing festival acquisition of all time.
On the other hand, Parsons' 'Backrooms' also surpassed $350 million globally, becoming A24's highest-grossing film in many countries. The 21-year-old Parsons also earned the title of the youngest director to achieve the highest box office in the local market. Nolan expressed that he disagrees with arguments suggesting that young audiences have limited attention spans, stating that such films are deep and thought-provoking.
Nolan noted that some parts of 'Backrooms' resemble David Lynch's most complex works, and he mentioned that young people enjoy watching such films. He stated that cinema is constantly evolving and that young talents are contributing to the industry, emphasizing that these developments are promising for the world of cinema.
