Director Valeria Sarmiento's new film 'Behind the Rain' had its world premiere in the Crystal Globe main competition at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film tackles the challenging subject of childhood sexual abuse, blending it with beautiful black-and-white landscape imagery. It is based on Sarmiento's original idea and the screenplay she co-wrote with the late Omar Saavedra Santis. The film's cinematographer is Acácio de Almeida, and the editor is Galut Alarcón.
The cast includes Paula Prado, Cristián Arriagada, Aline Kuppenheim, Shlomit Baytelman, Chamila Rodríguez, Daniel Muñoz, Julio Milostich, Aimar Alarcón Rodríguez, and Clara Vargas Arellano. Rodríguez also serves as a producer for the film. Sarmiento and Rodríguez have been collaborating since the film 'Secrets' (2008) and share the hope of sparking a societal discussion with 'Behind the Rain'.
Sarmiento notes that the inspiration for this story comes from the unfortunate prevalence of child abuse in society and the silence that often surrounds it. This film aims to provoke thought and open up discussions on this important issue.
