ABC's popular series The Rookie has announced its return in 2027. The show, centered around the Los Angeles Police Department, first premiered in 2018 and has won viewers' hearts over eight seasons. Starring Nathan Fillion, the series follows the adventures of a rookie who decides to become a police officer in middle age. The show is noted for its fast-paced scenes and its continuous showcase of new talents joining the LAPD. The eighth season concluded on May 4 with the finale episode titled "The Bandit".

In the eighth season finale, one of the show's villains, Heath Everett, kidnapped the beloved Chenford couple. This situation seems likely to provoke a reaction from the LAPD, and viewers are eagerly awaiting how this event will unfold in the ninth season. The new season is set to premiere in January 2024. Show creator Alexi Hawley stated in an interview with TVLine that filming for the ninth season began on July 21 and that the script is "very fun, romantic, and emotional".

The expanding fanbase of The Rookie was further strengthened with the addition of extra scenes to the show's eighth season's 10th episode. These additional scenes were released on July 20 and add five and a half more minutes to the episode. Hawley mentioned that this decision was made as a reward for the fans and that ABC has plans to expand The Rookie franchise. Following the failure of the 2022 spin-off The Rookie: Feds, the network is working on a new spin-off titled The Rookie: North. This new series will star Jay Ellis.
