The Devil Wears Prada 2, Steps into the Fashion World with $10 Million at Preview

May 01, 20262 min read
The Devil Wears Prada 2 kicked off its runway walk with an impressive $10 million at Thursday's previews, nearly twenty years after the original film. This figure marks one of the best openings for films led by female actors and is not far off from the currently successful Michael and Project Hail Mary films at the box office. The original film grossed $326.5 million worldwide, achieving box office success and becoming a cultural icon.

The preview performance of films directed by women has reached remarkable levels. In August 2023, another female-centered production titled It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, earned $7 million in previews and grossed over $350 million globally, with a weekend opening of $50 million.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 holds the notable distinction of being the first female-focused film to open the summer box office in the modern era. Historically, this role has almost always been assigned to Marvel superhero films or the Fast & Furious franchise. Prada 2 attracts moviegoers of all ages eager to see the original cast reunite, including Meryl Streep as the legendary fashion magazine editor, along with Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt. Another advantage for the project is the return of David Frankel as director and Aline Brosh McKenna as screenwriter.

In the international market, Prada 2 earned an impressive $40.5 million in its first two days across the initial 42 markets (including previews). The film also recorded the highest opening day of the year so far in countries such as Brazil, Italy, Korea, and Australia, as well as Belgium, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Greece, Ukraine, New Zealand, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

In a review by THR chief critic David Rooney, it was written: "If you're looking for a feast of fashion pornography, snarky jabs, and a fresh dose of Meryl Streep's iconic performance as the cautious Anna Wintour-inspired Miranda Priestly character, you’re unlikely to be disappointed."
