Universal Surpasses Disney: First Studio to Exceed $4 Billion in 2026

The leadership in the 2026 box office race in Hollywood has changed hands. As of Sunday, August 2, Universal became the first major studio of the year to surpass the $4 billion mark worldwide.

The company's films have grossed approximately $1.53 billion in North America and $2.48 billion in international markets. Disney had been the first studio to reach $3 billion by the end of June; Universal closed the gap during the summer season and reached the next major milestone first.

Three Different Films Lifted Universal to the Top

Universal's success was not determined by similar films appealing to the same audience, but rather by three distinct major productions.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, produced by Illumination and Nintendo, became the first film of the year to surpass $1 billion. Michael, a biopic about Michael Jackson, also crossed the $1 billion threshold at the global box office. Christopher Nolan's nearly three-hour-long adaptation of Homer, The Odyssey, reached $911.4 million by the end of its third weekend.

Thus, Universal achieved significant results from three separate genres: family animation, music biography, and historical epic. Moreover, there is no superhero film included in the studio's total of $4 billion.

The Odyssey Has Yet to Exceed $1 Billion

Universal's $4 billion threshold does not mean that The Odyssey has reached $1 billion at the global box office.

Christopher Nolan's film earned $395.5 million in North America and $515.9 million in other markets based on initial estimates for the weekend of August 2. The worldwide total is approximately $911.4 million. Since the film has not yet premiered in key markets like South Korea, China, and Japan, it is expected to surpass the $1 billion mark shortly.

This result is particularly noteworthy considering the film's structure. The Odyssey was considered risky at the box office due to its long runtime and age rating, as it is not based on an established modern cinema franchise. Nevertheless, it has become Universal's third major carrier of the year.

Michael's Earnings Aren't Fully Counted Towards Universal

The studio totals do not only consist of films directly produced by the companies. Regional revenues from the films they distribute are also included in this calculation.

Michael is the clearest example of this. While Lionsgate distributes the film in the U.S. and Canada, Universal handles its international release. Therefore, only the portion of the film's global earnings exceeding $1 billion that comes from the markets where Universal distributed it is counted in the studio's total.

Focus Features films are also part of Universal's distribution umbrella. Unexpected successes like Obsession, which was made for just $750,000 and reached approximately $475 million worldwide, supported the annual total behind the three major films.

$4 Billion Is Not Universal's Net Profit

The reported figure does not reflect the money that goes directly into Universal's coffers or its net profit for 2026. This amount represents the total value of tickets sold in theaters for the films the company distributed.

Box office revenue is then shared among theater operators, distributors, production partners, and other rights holders. Since production and marketing costs are not deducted, it is not accurate to present the $4 billion as the company's profit.

Nonetheless, the figure is an important measure of how broad an audience Universal has reached within the same year and its power in the distribution market.

Universal Crosses the $4 Billion Mark for the Fifth Time

Universal has surpassed $4 billion in annual global box office for the fifth time in studio history. The company last reached this level in 2023, a year highlighted by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Oppenheimer, and Fast X.

The 2026 scenario shows that Disney's dominance established in the first half of the year was not permanent. Disney continues to be a strong contender with Toy Story 5's performance exceeding $1 billion. Universal, on the other hand, captured the first $4 billion studio total of the year with productions spread across different genres.

The fact that The Odyssey has not yet completed its theatrical journey also indicates that the company's total will continue to grow in the coming weeks. Universal is currently the leader of the 2026 box office; however, the final outcome of the competition with Disney will be determined by the end of the year.
