Every year, there are some cancellations in the television world, and these cancellations often seem irrational. From networks canceling many shows with millions of viewers to streaming services ending series after just one season, some cancellations truly feel undeserved. One of the most controversial cancellations this year was Netflix's decision not to renew a new sci-fi series that was successful by most measures. With positive reviews from critics and strong viewership numbers, the series was expected to continue for multiple seasons.

Critics praised the series, which currently holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On the day it premiered, the show titled The Boroughs shot to number one on Netflix's global list and remained in the top ten for four weeks. Produced by Ross and Matt Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, the series found a diverse audience thanks to its focus on older characters. However, just a few weeks after its release, Netflix announced that it was canceling The Boroughs after one season.

Rumors spread quickly following the cancellation. It was claimed that the reason Netflix canceled the show was due to the Duffer Brothers' decision to move to a competing studio. Before The Boroughs, the duo, who created the streaming service's biggest show, had signed a deal to develop TV shows and films for Paramount. This decision was purely a tactical move; the brothers stated that they wanted to make films for theatrical release and that Netflix could never offer that. Although their relationship with the streaming service remained amicable, it was said that things had not been the same since then. However, Netflix explained that the cancellation of The Boroughs was a mathematical decision.
