The cult classic Nickelodeon series Invader Zim is making a comeback in 2026 with a new comic book series. While fans are excited, the series creator has some concerns. Despite being officially canceled in 2002, Zim has enjoyed a significant second life thanks to fan interest even after its original run ended. Now, with a new Zim series on the way, fans are cautiously optimistic.

The new Invader Zim series, first announced by IGN, is being developed by BOOM! Studios, known for adapting major brands like Power Rangers, Buffy, and Supernatural. Details about the series are currently limited; however, it is known that it will be released later in 2026 and that comic legends Jim Zub and Dax Gordine will be involved in the project.

The new Zim series comes five years after the conclusion of the previous series. Between 2015 and 2021, Oni Comics was the home of Invader Zim's comic books. The series creator Jhonen Vasquez's contributions made Oni's Invader Zim comics quite popular. However, Vasquez has mixed feelings about BOOM!'s initiative regarding Invader Zim.

In a post on Instagram on July 3, Jhonen Vasquez expressed his disappointment that BOOM! did not reach out to him regarding the new Invader Zim comic. He noted that he learned about this at the same time as the fans. While Vasquez did not adopt an aggressive tone in his Instagram post, it is clear that he expected to be given a bit more consideration.

Following Vasquez's statement, Zim's new writer Jim Zub responded on his personal blog. Zub stated that Zim is very valuable to him and that he got the impression that Vasquez approved of the new series when he signed on. Zub empathized with Vasquez, mentioning that BOOM! reached out to the famous creator to rectify the situation. What this entails is still unclear, but BOOM!'s start with the Zim series has begun on a strange note.

Nevertheless, despite Vasquez's concerns, there are good reasons to believe that BOOM!'s new series will be solid. BOOM!'s work on Power Rangers has been well-received by fans, and the studio's other licensed comics have also been appreciated. Additionally, the announced creative team is reassuring. Jim Zub is a well-known name who has worked on many comic projects, including major ones for Marvel and DC.
