Halo: Campaign Evolved A Highly Controversial Remake
Screen Rant
Halo: Campaign Evolved takes the Halo series back to where it all began, but the approach of the new remake has already sparked considerable debate. Criticisms range widely from changes in level design to the artificial intelligence used in the development, complicating the remake's struggle to reach the original legacy.
One of the most disappointing aspects is the absence of multiplayer modes in Campaign Evolved. The remake disregards the original PvP component and only offers the campaign's cooperative play feature. Now, one of the key figures behind Campaign Evolved has provided a new explanation for why Halo Studios chose to proceed in this direction.
In the July 2026 issue of Game Informer, Damon Conn, one of the producers at Halo Studios, details the points the team focused on for the remake. Conn states that Halo Studios is "really focused on the story that started it all" and emphasizes that Halo: Campaign Evolved is ultimately about "telling that original story."
Halo: Campaign Evolved is the first Halo game made with Unreal Engine, and during the development process, priority was given to bringing the campaign to life within this engine. Conn expresses that they are working on "taking all the little pieces and making sure they feel good, look good, and play incredibly well." However, he adds that they also have goals for "progressing in different directions" with the added missions.
While Conn's statements diplomatically explain the team's focus on single-player, he avoids making a direct statement regarding the absence of the multiplayer component. It's common for remakes to cut content; for example, the recently released Black Flag Resynced chose to remove certain combat features to keep the scope of development manageable. However, since Halo has always been known for its multiplayer structure, this absence stands out as a significant shortcoming.
Halo: Campaign Evolved will introduce many new players to the series as it will be released for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC for the first time. I'm not very hopeful based on what I've seen so far, but I hope Halo Studios can provide a solid enough experience to convert at least some of these new players into true Halo fans. However, those seeking a multiplayer experience will have to turn to a different console and a different version of Halo to satisfy that desire.
