George Lucas and Disney: How Many Jedi Survived Order 66?

“Execute Order 66!” These three words, spoken by Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith, forever changed the Star Wars universe. Clone troopers began to kill their Jedi allies across the galaxy, and this, combined with Anakin Skywalker’s killing of the Separatist leaders as Palpatine’s apprentice, brought the Clone Wars to an end and restructured the Republic into the Galactic Empire.

The Jedi Order, which had existed for thousands of years, was wiped out in just a few minutes. Fortunately, some Jedi who survived Order 66 managed to hide. Because these peacekeepers were not completely eradicated, it set the stage for Luke Skywalker to learn the ways of the Force years later and help the Rebellion overthrow the Empire.

However, the number of Jedi who escaped Order 66 varies depending on which Star Wars era is being discussed. After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the official Star Wars mythology expanded significantly. This creates a notable difference compared to the now non-existent Expanded Universe (Legends). While the Star Wars series was managed during the George Lucas era, a significant increase in the number of Jedi who survived after Order 66 is observed in the era that Disney took over.

If Legends stories are not taken into account, it is confirmed that only Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda survived Order 66. During this period, only the films and the Clone Wars series were officially recognized. Luke and Leia could be seen as honorable reminders that they would be destroyed as part of the Jedi hunt if found. However, since they were infants, they were only Force-sensitive, not actual Jedi.

On the other hand, if Legends stories are counted, the number of Jedi who survived Order 66 increases significantly. Notable examples include Quinlan Vos, Jedi High Council member Shaak Ti, Falon Grey, Kai Justiss, and Rahm Kota. Although most of these Jedi had died by the time A New Hope began, some managed to survive the Galactic Civil War and later joined Luke’s New Jedi Order. After Disney took over Star Wars, the number of survivors of Order 66 is now recorded as dozens, perhaps even hundreds.
