Devil Wears Prada 2 Director Adrian Grenier Reveals He Considered a Cameo Scene But Couldn't Make It Happen
David Frankel, the director of Devil Wears Prada 2, announced that Adrian Grenier, who played Andy's boyfriend Nate in the original film, will not be appearing in the sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Frankel stated that the idea of creating a camouflage cameo scene for Grenier initially crossed his mind, but it could not be realized due to the tight production schedule.
"I had an idea about secretly having Adrian do a cameo, but in the end, we just didn't have enough time in our production schedule," Frankel said, adding that they wrapped filming about a month before the planned release date, which left them with no time. While the original film's stars, including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt, return for the sequel, Grenier's character did not find a place on screen.
Following the news reported by Hollywood Reporter in July, Grenier revealed that he was not invited and claimed this was due to the negative public perception of his character Nate. Grenier addressed the issue, saying to Page Six, "Of course, not being part of the sequel was disappointing, but I understand there were some reactions to the Nate character."
Last month, Grenier humorously addressed his absence from the sequel in a Starbucks commercial. "You may have seen the headlines — I wasn’t wanted as part of a certain sequel. But it’s fine. Really. Everything is good energy," he joked, adding, "A toast to Nate. He would have made a nice sandwich. He loved his girlfriend, to some extent. He wasn't perfect. So let's leave Nate in 2006."
Frankel praised Grenier's humorous attitude in the Starbucks ad, noting that he didn't reveal what Nate would do in the sequel. "I shouldn't say what Nate could do in the sequel, but I was really happy to see him do that Starbucks commercial, which was very funny and self-deprecating. I loved his humility and the comedy he showed!" he said.
Devil Wears Prada 2 will hit theaters on May 1.
