Director Valeria Sarmiento's new film 'Behind the Rain' had its world premiere in the Crystal Globe main competition at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. The film blends the difficult subject of childhood sexual abuse with beautiful black-and-white landscape imagery, based on Sarmiento's original idea and a screenplay co-written with the late Omar Saavedra Santis. The film's cinematographer is Acácio de Almeida, and the editor is Galut Alarcón.
The cast includes Paula Prado, Cristián Arriagada, Aline Kuppenheim, Shlomit Baytelman, Chamila Rodríguez, Daniel Muñoz, Julio Milostich, Aimar Alarcón Rodríguez, and Clara Vargas Arellano. Rodríguez also serves as the film's producer. Sarmiento and Rodríguez have been collaborating since the film 'Secrets' (2008) and shared their hopes of sparking a social discussion with 'Behind the Rain' with The Hollywood Reporter.
Sarmiento noted that the inspiration for this story comes from the unfortunate prevalence of child abuse in society and the often silence surrounding it. This film aims to provoke thought on this important issue and create social awareness.
