Outerscope I segment From a Pile of Planks; a history of the drum across cultures; a lesson about English words with origins in other languages; a story about Martin and his pet snake Nigel; a Woody the Spoon recipe of Mexican guacamole; and a lesson about the word "minority" and what it means.
Outerscope I – Ready for Blast-Off Cynthia, who isn't sure that their spaceship is more than a game, suggests a fuel made from water, sugar, and yeast. All the kids finish off the ship and call it Outerscope I. Willie appoints himself captain of the spaceship.
Outerscope I – Shooting Through Space The Outerscope I really flies into outer space. Willie seems to be steering it well, but the ship runs into problems.
Outerscope I – Crash Landing The kids have landed on a strange planet. With Outerscope I stuck, they follow a checkerboard-patterned path and find the planet populated with household cleaning items.
Outerscope I – The March to the Throne King Scrub and Queen Polish rule Saniland, the cleanest place in the universe. When they confront the kids, they automatically assume Earthlings are dirty.
Outerscope I – The Trail is Discovered Willie and Cynthia try to tell the truth about Earth to the Sanilanders. But their plea fails when ""dirt"" is discovered on the pathway.
Outerscope I – Betty Surprises Them All The Sanilanders are convinced the kids have committed a severe crime. But they are all surprised when Betty, Cynthia's cat, washes herself. It's the kids chance to get back to Outerscope I, still stuck in the rockface. A bar of soap lubricates the ship and the rock.
Outerscope I – Searching for Help The kids escape Saniland and steer Outerscope I to another world. This planet has a metal exterior, replete with complex machinery.
Outerscope I – A Staggering Shock The machines identify themselves as the Family Syncovek. They tell the kids they are on the planet Technovek, inhabited entirely by artificial intelligence. But Edgar and the others don't trust them.
Outerscope I – Mamavek Makes an Offer The machines of Technovek give directions to Earth as a gesture of gratitude to the kids. But Edgar, Cynthia, and Willie think it's a trick.
Outerscope I – The End of the Rainbow Edgar, Cynthia, and Willie decide to follow the directions from Technovek to Earth backwards. Only when Outerscope I lands on an outer-space rainbow do they realize the Technovek family was trying to help them.
Outerscope I – The Secret The creatures from the rainbow want to be friendly to the kids, so much so that they are willing to share the secret of happiness. Willie, Eleanor, and Edgar step out of Outerscope I to see these creatures, called the Tree Treats. Their secret is in the Yun Yuns.
Outerscope I – It's Show Time! The Tree Treats' ""happiness"" comes from seeing Yun Yuns do a minstrel-type stage act that is all anti-Yun Yuns. Back at Outerscope I, Cynthia and Henry hear a story from an elderly Yun Yun, who tells how the Tree Treats robbed the Yun Yuns of their power, property, and self-esteem.
Outerscope I – A Tale of Woe Edgar and Eleanor are ready to give raves about the Yun Yuns show, but Willie starts to feel sorry for the Yun Yuns. Two younger Tree Treats are stunned that the Yun Yuns close to Outerscope I are glum. Henry and Cynthia tell the truth about the Yun Yuns' plight to Edgar, Eleanor, and Willie.
Outerscope I – Mirrors Don't Lie Cynthia thinks up a strategy to teach the Tree Treats a lesson. The plan is for the Tree Treats to mirror the Yun Yuns and vice-versa.
Outerscope I –Playing the Game The Tree Treats perform a stage show belittling themselves. This gives the Yun Yuns the opportunity to boo the Tree Treats. Elderly Weepy Yun Yun is the first to sense the cruelty, and the Tree Treats get the picture as well. Regardless of who's bullying who, nobody is really happy. The Yun Yuns and Tree Treats agree to treat each other as equals.
Outerscope I – Collision After leaving the rainbow, Outerscope I lands in a dark land. Eleanor walks out and finds a keyhole.
Outerscope I – Where is the Door? Eleanor finds the doorknob, and all the kids open the door. Inside, they encounter a room with doors on all sides. The furniture proves even more strange.
Outerscope I – The Doors Open The kids find unusual behavior from everyone behind the doors. It seems they act and talk opposite of what is Earth custom.
Outerscope I – Collecting Clues The kids continue to observe the behavior of the people within the doors. It's all backwards, especially their speech. Eleanor, Henry, Edgar, and Cynthia try to talk to one of the residents.
Outerscope I – Adding Up the Clues Willie nearly gets everyone into trouble by not communicating correctly with the people behind the doors.
Outerscope I – The Vanishing Door The backward people agree to speak in line with the kids. With that hurdle cleared, one of the residents remembers an invisible door that connects this world to the universe.
Outerscope I – Space Spin The kids point Outerscope I directly to their universe. But the ship wrecks on the surface of a patchwork land. They were pulled in from the breath of a creature called Hategut, which steals things at will.
Outerscope I – Caught with the Loot Hategut has taken Henry's glasses and the Outerscope I steering device. He leaves behind sacks of grain, evidence the Western-era inhabitants of the planet use to arrest Willie and Edgar.
Outerscope I – Behind Bars Eleanor, Cynthia, and Henry regain consciousness in a jail. They learn that both the inhabitants of the planet, the Cobblites and the Grubbers, blame each other for stealing.
Outerscope I – Hategut Strikes Again After years of blaming each other for stealing things, the Grubbers have challenged the Cobblites to a showdown. But during the night, Cynthia, Henry, and Eleanor find the real culprit: the uncaring Hategut. In his fit of pique, Hategut takes down a wall of the cell, freeing the kids and putting them on his trail.
Outerscope I – The Showdown Cynthia, Eleanor, and Henry enter Hategut's hiding place to find all the things he stole from the Cobblites and Grubbers. They free Willie and Edgar just after the Grubbers leave for their showdown. The kids tell the truth about Hategut to both the Cobblites and Grubbers.
Outerscope I – Back at Hategut's Hole The Cobblites and Grubbers, realizing the truth, forgive their past indiscretions. Together with the kids, they come to reason with a weakened Hategut. Since they tell him they would love him should he change, Hategut swears to good deeds. Outerscope I is repaired.
Outerscope I – Jewels of the Sky Henry is at the controls of Outerscope I as all the kids want to see Earth. They encounter a cluster of windows and eerie music. One window confronts them with a flashback of Saniland.
Outerscope I – Windows to the Past The kids sail through more flashbacks of Saniland, Technovek, and the rainbow world.
