Nanotechnology researcher Wang Miao is taken to the Joint Operations Center by police officer Shi Qiang to investigate the mysterious suicides of several scientists. He is secretly invited to join an organization called the Frontiers of Science. Wang Miao contacts astrophysicist Ye Wenjie, the mother of the deceased scientist Yang Dong, is introduced to a sophisticated virtual reality video game called Three-Body, and uncovers its hidden meaning.
