In the 2500s, as the Earth's population continues to grow and resources dwindle, people begin to migrate to other planets. Those who settle on the central planets continue civilization and establish the Alliance. Others declare their independence by settling on surrounding planets and moons. The Alliance starts a war to bring these independents into its fold. After the war, Captain Malcolm Reynolds hijacks a Firefly-class spaceship and enters the smuggling business.
