The series takes place thousands of years in the future and revolves around the Systems Commonwealth, a constitutional monarchy in the Tarn - Vedra star system. Humanity was discovered by the Commonwealth thousands of years ago and has become a part of it. The Commonwealth has spread across three galaxies that are three million light-years apart: the Milky Way, Triangulum, and Andromeda. Ships travel through the universe along predetermined paths faster than light. Although the Commonwealth appears to be a utopian society, it is at war with the Magogs, a bat-faced humanoid species. A few years ago, as a gesture of goodwill, the Commonwealth allocated a planet for the Magogs. The species living on this planet were genetically modified Nietzscheans. The Nietzscheans were dissatisfied with the peace negotiations with the Magogs and secretly began planning to take control of the Commonwealth. This situation can be linked to the species' belief in the concept of "Übermensch" by the famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The Commonwealth was protected by the High Guard Fleet, a fleet consisting of many ships. The main character of the series, Dylan Hunt, is the captain of a Commonwealth ship called Andromeda Ascendant. The ship's computer, a powerful artificial intelligence, is a central character in the series. The High Guard Fleet, which includes Captain Hunt, has suffered a Nietzschean attack. They were forced to abandon ship, but Andromeda plunged into a black hole and froze in time. 303 years later, a rescue ship, Eureka Maru, finds Hunt's ship. During the time it was frozen, the civilization he knew had changed. The crew of the rescue ship includes: Beka Valentine, an artist and master pilot; Seamus Harper, a super-genius engineer who can integrate his brain directly into the computer system (rescued from a Nietzschean enslaved Earth by Beka); Trance Gemini, and Rev Bem. "Rev" is short for Reverend; despite being a Magog and having a wild nature, he discovered a non-violent religious sect called the Way, which resembles Taoist thought, and has become one of its monks. Trance is a fairy-like pink female alien.
