Universal Changes Release Dates for The Mummy and Miami Vice '85
Deadline
Universal Pictures has changed the release dates for two major blockbuster films on its calendar. The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, has been moved to October 15, 2027, under the direction of Radio Silence, while Miami Vice '85 has been postponed to May 19, 2028. This change was made because one of the productions is more prepared for release at the specified time.
On the new release date of The Mummy, October 15, 2027, there is currently only one unnamed film from Paramount scheduled. Previously, a Blumhouse production was set for this date, but that project has been shifted to October 8, 2027. Fraser and Weisz will reprise their roles as Rick and Evie O'Connell from the original film.
On the other hand, Miami Vice '85, directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, will be released on May 19, 2028, differing from its original plan. The film was initially scheduled for August 6, 2027, but the date has been changed. This new date falls on the weekend before Memorial Day.
Universal Pictures has reserved August 6, 2027, for an unnamed event film. The studio has had successful openings on this date in past years, reminding that the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw opened to $60 million during this period.
The new date for Miami Vice '85 is positioned in May and before the Memorial Day week, and Universal is not considering any major studio productions overlapping on this date. These date changes are a common practice aimed at balancing competition and marketing strategies among films.
