Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks and part of Apple TV+'s original productions, has reached a significant place in the all-time list of streaming platforms. Sold to Apple by Sony in 2020, this World War II thriller continues to engage audiences even after a long period. According to FlixPatrol's data, the film has remained on the country charts of the Apple TV platform for over 650 days, only falling behind Mark Wahlberg's starring film The Family Plan. Sony's decision to transfer this production to Apple for around $70 million seems to have been beneficial for both parties.

Apple TV+, releasing far fewer titles compared to competing platforms, has relatively static viewership charts. Unlike other streaming services that host content licensed from various studios, Apple TV+ relies solely on its own productions. This unique structure allows Apple's original films to achieve numbers that other platform productions cannot reach. This is not necessarily due to more people watching, but perhaps because they are not interrupted by new releases.

Greyhound was never designed as a streaming platform film. Instead, it became the blockbuster film that Apple TV+ desperately needed in 2020, a year when it broke viewership records in home settings. Directed by Aaron Schneider and produced with a budget of around $50 million, the film also features Stephen Graham and Elisabeth Shue in its cast. The film continues Tom Hanks' interest in historical periods following Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, and The Pacific.

Following the success of Greyhound, Hanks signed a deal with Apple TV+ for another World War II miniseries titled Masters of the Air, where he works as an executive producer alongside Steven Spielberg. This production also made a significant contribution to the platform's original content. The film received largely positive reviews from industry magazines and earned a score of 78% with a "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. According to the review on the site, "While the characters in Greyhound may not be as solid as the action scenes, this fast-paced World War II thriller benefits from its efficient and economical approach."

The film's success has added a new dimension to Apple TV+'s original content strategy. Having an established star like Tom Hanks in a production depicting a historical period has helped enhance the platform's prestige. The fact that audiences continue to watch the film for such an extended period provides important clues about the quality of the production and its viewer appeal.

A sequel is currently in production, and plans are underway to expand the Greyhound universe. This development aligns with Apple TV+'s strategy of developing new projects with its successful productions.
