Sam Rockwell Brings 'A View from the Bridge' Back to the Stage
The Hollywood Reporter
Sam Rockwell will stage a new revision of Arthur Miller's tragic family drama "A View from the Bridge" in New York. Rockwell will portray the character Eddie, while Marin Ireland will play Beatrice and Alfred Molina will take on the role of Alfieri. The play will be directed by Neil Pepe, and Rockwell will co-produce the show with his partner Mark Berger. The performance will begin on November 27 at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theater, with opening night set for December 13.
La MaMa is an Off-Off-Broadway theater known for its support of experimental works and underrepresented artists. Rockwell's connection to this theater has made it possible for such a commercial production to be staged here. This reflects Rockwell's commitment to La MaMa and his effort to draw more attention to this nonprofit theater. Rockwell stated, "Coming to La MaMa as a child and spending time backstage with my mother during that era of experimental theater is among my earliest theater memories. Returning to the Ellen Stewart Theater with Arthur Miller's masterpiece feels like a full circle."
"A View from the Bridge" premiered in 1965 at the Sheridan Square Playhouse, featuring Robert Duvall and Jon Voight. The play tells the story of Eddie Carbone, a dockworker living in Brooklyn, and how his unhealthy obsession with his young niece Catherine destroys his family. Alfieri serves as the narrator of this downfall. Rockwell returns to the stage after performing in "American Buffalo" on Broadway in 2022.
The production team will be supported by Scott Pask's set design, Sarah Laux's costume design, John Torres' lighting design, and Palmer Hefferan's sound design. Rockwell's passion for this project and his commitment to La MaMa highlight the cultural significance of the theater.
