Louis C.K. Receives Standing Ovation at Netflix Comedy Festival
The Hollywood Reporter
Louis C.K. had largely stepped away from comedy following sexual harassment allegations from five women in 2017. Nine years later, the comedian performed at the Hollywood Bowl as part of the Netflix is a Joke festival. C.K. took the stage in Los Angeles on Tuesday night, marking the final stop of his year-long "Ridiculous" world tour. The iconic venue was filled to about 75% capacity, mostly with male fans in their 20s and 30s.
C.K. delivered a set heavy on sexual content, including jokes about penises, vaginas, sexually transmitted diseases, and Barely Legal magazine. The comedian, who made no mention of the harassment allegations, returned to his usual raunchy material. The 58-year-old artist also commented on his dating life, stating he has a girlfriend and believes in dating women who are older. Towards the end of his set, C.K. received a standing ovation from the audience and concluded with, "This is my last show, and I’m really happy to have been able to share these jokes with you. Thank you so much for coming. Also, a big thank you to Netflix."
C.K. will not only be part of the festival through Netflix but will also star in a comedy special titled "Ridiculous," which will be released on the platform this summer. C.K., who is the director and producer of Ridiculous, executive produced it himself, with Lea Cohen Zuckerman and Brady Nasfell also involved in the production process. The comedian had previously worked with Netflix in 2017.
Over the past eight years, C.K. has gradually rebuilt his career. Following the sexual harassment report, FX severed ties with C.K. and terminated his overall deal. He also lost the title of director on multiple series and was dropped by his management firm and news agency. The distributor of his film "I Love You, Daddy," which he wrote, directed, and starred in, canceled it. Since then, he has filled increasingly larger venues around the world and published a novel titled "Ingram," which was sold as the only official merchandise at the show.
The Netflix is a Joke festival will conclude on Sunday, featuring hundreds of shows in Los Angeles. Famous comedians such as Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, John Mulaney, Nate Bargatze, Chelsea Handler, and Wanda Sykes will also headline the festival.
