Nansun Shi, a pioneer of Hong Kong cinema and co-founder of Film Workshop, has passed away at the age of 75. Shi was particularly known for producing the cult crime thriller Infernal Affairs, which inspired Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning film The Departed. She peacefully departed this life at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Film Workshop announced that Shi had been battling health issues since 2022, and the infections she experienced in recent months led to multiple organ failure. Following her passing, it was stated that information regarding memorial and funeral arrangements would be provided.

Throughout her career spanning over 40 years, Shi was regarded as one of the most influential figures in Hong Kong cinema. She contributed to the glorious era of the 1980s, was one of the architects of the revival in the early 2000s, and was among the first local producers to establish international distribution channels for Chinese-language cinema. Additionally, she played a pioneering role during the early days when Hong Kong producers began shooting on the mainland.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Shi pursued her education in statistics and computer science at North London Polytechnic before starting her television career in the mid-1970s. She made her mark in the industry by working with broadcasters like TVB and Rediffusion. She stepped into her film career in 1981 as an executive at the comedy production company Cinema City, where she took on critical roles in management, financing, and international sales.
