FX has released the official trailer for its new drama series The Shards, produced by Ryan Murphy and based on the bestselling novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The series explores how privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school in 1980s Los Angeles cope with identity, sexuality, jealousy, obsession, and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American youth.

The Shards centers around Bret (Igby Rigney), who dreams of becoming a writer. Bret's world changes when he meets the "amazing and captivating new student" Robert Mallory (Homer Gere). Robert transfers to the school just before Bret's senior year begins, coinciding with the rising fear of a serial killer known as The Trawler, who targets young people across the city.

Bret's social circle includes characters like Susan Reynolds (Kaia Gerber), Debbie Schaffer (Hayes Warner), and Thom Wright (Graham Campbell). In the trailer, Bret's growing distrust of Robert is evident, while the friend group questions this situation. Susan critiques Bret, saying, "You always exaggerate everything."

The Shards, brought to life with contributions from Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Ellis, and other producers, is based on Ellis's 2023 horror novel.
