Devil May Cry Creator Hideki Kamiya Responded to Netflix Series Criticism in 5 Words
Screen Rant
Days before the release of the second season of Devil May Cry on Netflix, some negative reactions, commonly seen in game adaptations, emerged. While the series could justifiably be criticized for its writing and overly edgy tone, some fans unnecessarily began attacking creator Adi Shankar's social media biography. Although Shankar introduced himself as the creator of Devil May Cry on Netflix on Instagram, some fans tried to involve the original game's producer and director Hideki Kamiya in this "debate".
Unhappy fans decided to call on Kamiya to comment on Shankar, but the former video game designer bluntly rejected these requests. Kamiya's response was limited to just five words: "I’m not your damn mom." This reply served as proof of how trivial the situation was and showed how little Kamiya cared about the matter.
Kamiya's responses to such reactions have been ongoing since the release of season 1 a year ago, and he has similarly given harsh rejections regarding the series. During the same period, Kamiya had expressed his desire to remake the original Devil May Cry game with modern technologies. Following Shankar's claims of introducing himself as the creator of the franchise, Kamiya reminded fans of how trivial the issue was by saying, "stop crying to me about every little thing."
Shankar's promotions may seem excessive, like Dante appearing on social media in costume with his famous Ebony & Ivory weapons. However, this is his personal style, and Kamiya has regarded such promotions as insignificant. Kamiya closed the matter by stating that he wouldn't earn a dime from the game itself.
Shankar had stated during the release of season 1 that "trauma" was the final enemy of Devil May Cry, and fans were disappointed by the relatively weak portrayal of the Dante character. In season 2, Dante will not only reunite with his brother Vergil but will also show significant development. Shankar has indicated in statements made after season 1 that he wants to develop Dante in a way that "surpasses the level" and plans for the character to become the great icon that fans recognize.
Shankar's claim on Twitter that season 2 will be "on the level of The Dark Knight" has created high expectations for viewers. Although these statements were made to indicate that season 2 would be a leap from season 1's "Batman Begins" level, they set expectations quite high. Given Shankar's commitment to the project, it is natural for him to promote it heavily. However, it is quite strange that fans are trying to convince the former developers to warn Shankar, despite this having little impact on the future of the game franchise.
Devil May Cry will be released on Netflix on May 12, 2026, along with season 2.
