The Hollywood Reporter
The teaser trailer for the film 'Buddy,' starring Cristin Milioti and Keegan-Michael Key, showcases the mysterious adventures of an orange unicorn who hosts a children's television program. Roadside Attractions will release this horror-comedy film, directed by Casper Kelly, in theaters on August 28. The film premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival and features a cast that includes Topher Grace, Delaney Quinn, Patton Oswalt, and Michael Shannon.
'Buddy' tells the story of a bright orange unicorn who presents a classic children's program. However, when a child refuses to join in the fun, Buddy's mood shifts, and the seemingly perfect world takes an unexpectedly dark turn. The trailer combines moments of horror with scenes of Buddy dancing with children, offering viewers both an entertaining and chilling experience.
Kelly is known for his viral horror short film 'Too Many Cooks,' created for Adult Swim in 2014. The film 'Buddy' is adapted from a screenplay co-written by Kelly and Jamie King. Among the producers are Tyler Davidson, Drew Sykes, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and Tracy Rosenblum. Additionally, alongside Kelly and King, executive producers on the project include Kevin Flanigan, Dexter Braff, Roberto Linck, Nathan McAuley, Emilio Schenker, Gideon Tadmor, Adam J. Wilde, Geoff Yaw, and Ryan J. Kelly.
David Rooney, the chief film critic from The Hollywood Reporter, noted in his review of 'Buddy' that the film "enriches the sketch comedy concept with blood and horror-filled deviations, but is not as extreme or disturbing as it aims to be." Rooney also added that the film's "greatest asset is the inspiring voice performance of Keegan-Michael Key as the lead character."
