A coalition of trade groups from the music industry, led by the RIAA and IFPI, has announced an AI music labeling program. This initiative was created to ensure broader adoption by music streaming services and other industry stakeholders during a time when AI-generated songs are flooding the market.
The program will have a structure similar to the labeling of open music in existing music services. Two different labels have been proposed: the "Produced by AI" logo indicates that a song was created entirely or largely by AI; while the "AI-assisted" logo will show that the recording was significantly created by humans but utilized AI for some "expressive elements." In addition to the RIAA and IFPI, other groups such as the Recording Academy, SAG-AFTRA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, and the Human Artistry Campaign have also expressed their support for this labeling.
The announcement stated that the labels will be implemented voluntarily, and the groups indicated that these labels are "designed to evolve as technology and requirements change." IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA President and CEO Mitch Glazier emphasized that "fans want to know how creative AI is being used in the music they listen to," highlighting the importance of these labels for transparency.
It remains uncertain when and how this system will be adopted. The coalition stated that they will "work with digital music services, distributors, collectors, and standard-setting organizations for industry-wide implementation." This step comes at a time when AI music is rapidly spreading in the music ecosystem. While some platforms have decided to completely ban AI music, it has been revealed that about one-third of daily uploads on Apple Music are generated by AI.
