Super Mario and Project Hail Mary Share the Top Spot at the Box Office, Lee Cronin's The Mummy Debuts at Third Place
The Hollywood Reporter
While Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary hold the top positions at the box office, Lee Cronin's new horror film The Mummy entered the domestic box office at third place with an estimated $12.5 million based on Friday's figures. Universal and Illumination's The Super Mario is set to surpass the $350 million mark this weekend and is expected to lead the rankings with around $30 million in its third weekend. Despite the second film lagging $60 million behind the first Super Mario, it continues to hold the position of Hollywood's highest-grossing film this year, moving towards ticket sales nearing $700 million worldwide.
Amazon MGM Studios' Hail Mary earned an estimated $18.5 million in its fifth weekend, experiencing a 23% drop, bringing its domestic total to $283 million. This successful film will return to Imax and other premium large format screens this weekend, while actor and producer Ryan Gosling, along with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, gathered at CinemaCon to thank theater owners and announce that Amazon MGM has extended the film's theatrical release rights.
The Mummy, produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster, is an R-rated film that reimagines Universal's family-friendly franchise through Cronin's vision. While film critics are divided, audience reactions have remained solid. The film also shared its position on Imax screens with Hail Mary.
Next weekend will be completely transformed with Lionsgate's Michael, a biopic about Michael Jackson, and the summer box office season will officially kick off with the release of The Devil Wears Prada 2 a week later.
