Beaches, The New Musical, announced that it will close on May 24 as the first victim of this season's Tony nominations. The musical began previews at the Majestic Theatre on March 27 and officially opened on April 22. However, it failed to attract the expected interest, receiving mixed and negative reviews from both audiences and critics. Last week, the musical was performed on Broadway at only 51% capacity, generating weekly revenues of $550,000 or less since its opening, which is significantly below the operating costs of an average musical.

Featuring stars like Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett, the musical was anticipated to receive nominations for its lead actors or itself. However, it was known that the show was always planned for a limited Broadway run and would be staged until September 6. The production team has announced that they are currently planning a national tour. After nearly 10 years of development, the musical will make its international premiere in 2024 at Theatre Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

The story is based on a bestselling book by Iris Rainer Dart, which was co-starred by Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey in 1998. It revolves around the friendship of Cee Cee and Bertie, who meet in childhood and navigate their relationship through marriage, career highs and lows, and illnesses.

The musical is directed by Lonny Price and Matt Cowart. The music by Grammy Award-winning Mike Stoller, along with lyrics by Dart and a book co-written by Dart and Thom Thomas, brings the production to life. Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso stated, "Bringing a new musical to Broadway is always a major undertaking, and we are proud of this team that created a production filled with heart, humanity, humor, and emotional truth."
