AMC Global Media Developing 'Bannerman' Series; 'Point Break' Set to Premiere in 2027
The Hollywood Reporter
AMC Global Media presented updates on a series starring NASCAR star Dennis Quaid, a new sports documentary focused on the New Orleans Saints, a potential series based on the Bannerman novels, and the Point Break TV series during its first upfront presentation under a new brand name. The company brought together advertising executives, media buyers, distribution partners, and many famous actors at the event in Tribeca.
This new production, titled Thunder Road, is a scripted series designed as a family drama set in the NASCAR world featuring Dennis Quaid. AMC seems determined to continue its focus on sports-themed content after launching its first Rise series about the San Francisco 49ers this year. Dan McDermott, Chief Content Officer of AMC Global Media and President of AMC Studios, stated that the company will not be held back from NBA or NFL rights but will continue its efforts to carve out a space in the sports genre.
McDermott described the three core elements of AMC series as follows: an iconic character that can be turned into a poster and is recognizable to everyone; taking viewers to a unique world or subculture they haven't seen before; and providing content that not only entertains but also has meaning and thematic depth. In Thunder Road, this role is portrayed by Dennis Quaid.
Kim Kelleher, President and Chief Commercial Officer of AMC Global Media, emphasized that sports have the power to bring people together during major divides, explaining that the company is focusing on sports stories while avoiding broadcast rights for major leagues like the NFL. The Thunder Road and Rise of the Saints series are set to premiere next year.
The company also announced a project to develop a series based on bestselling author John Maxim's Bannerman spy novels. Shane Black, director of Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3, has been appointed as director and producer for the series. Craig Silverstein will serve as the creator and showrunner. The novels depict the reluctant return of former CIA agent John Bannerman to that world.
