Aleshea Harris's 'Is God Is' Film Surprises Audiences
The Hollywood Reporter
Aleshea Harris made a significant breakthrough as both a writer and director with her film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize finalist play 'Is God Is.' The film boasts a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and stands out as one of the year's most striking productions. Harris tells a classic revenge story through the lens of twin sisters Racine (Kara Young) and Anaia (Mallori Johnson). The sisters embark on a journey to find their father at their mother's request; this journey is filled with scars from the physical abuse they endured in their childhood.
The film draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, from ancient Greek tragedy to the Coen Brothers' 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?' During their confrontation with their father (Sterling K. Brown), they encounter characters played by Mykelti Williamson, Janelle Monáe, and Erika Alexander. These encounters deepen the story's bloody, darkly comedic, and violent nature.
Harris presents a bold cinematographic language that audiences may not be used to. Despite opening in 1,500 theaters with a wide distribution, the film only grossed $2.2 million in its opening weekend. However, it garnered strong acclaim among viewers who gave it a chance, receiving high audience ratings overall. Harris elaborated on the transition from stage to screen, her biggest learnings behind the camera, and the significance of telling a revenge story about Black women.
