Boutique distributor 1-2 Special announced that it has acquired Emmanuel Marre's French period drama "A Man of His Time" for North America. The film offers a rare glimpse into the Vichy regime and the collaboration of the French with the Nazis, inspired by the story of Marre's own grandfather. Set in 1940, the film follows Henri Marre (played by Swann Arlaud from Anatomy of a Fall) as he tries to navigate the new regime.
"A Man of His Time" received a warm reception at its world premiere in Cannes, winning the best screenplay award. Jordan Mintzer, a critic from The Hollywood Reporter, described the film as "a fresh look at wartime fascism." Highlighting Marre's modern approach, Mintzer noted that despite being a period film, it resonates more with contemporary issues. The film feels as if someone went back to 1940 and recorded the years of far-right compliance and moral decay with an iPhone.
Marre expressed his immense happiness about "A Man of His Time" being distributed by 1-2 Special. "It is a true honor for me to be part of a carefully curated program. I can't wait to see the film reach audiences in the U.S. and how this profound European story will interact with our contemporary world," he said. 1-2 Special will release "A Man of His Time" in theaters next year.
