Tomoya Okazaki is a third-year high school student who feels resentful about his life. His mother died in a car accident when he was younger, leading his father to turn to alcohol and cigarettes. This results in frequent fights between them until Tomoya injures his shoulder during one of these altercations. Since then, he has maintained a distant relationship with his father, which gradually turns him into a delinquent. While walking to school, he encounters a peculiar girl named Nagisa Furukawa, who is a year older but is repeating her grade due to illness. As a result, she often finds herself alone since most of her friends have moved on. The two start spending time together, and slowly, as time passes, Tomoya begins to see his life taking a new turn.
