As far as fantasy works go, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series really is one of the most deserving of all the credit it gets. The books are some of the bestselling in the genre of all time, but the franchise remains relatively underutilized over the last decade or so, in terms of adaptations to other mediums. The most notable of those is almost certainly the Prime Video television release, which ran for three seasons before being pretty unceremoniously canceled by the streaming giant. Outside of that, it has been relatively slim pickings, but a new project is on the way that could easily become the most exciting of them all to date. Published by Dire Wolf Games, War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is an upcoming board game that recently blew past its $50,000 Kickstarter goal, raising over $1.1 million from more than 6000 backers. The game promises to be one of the most interactive ways to experience the original story that we have ever had, with this particular release starting part way through the narrative. In sharing what exactly fans can expect from the new game, the developer shared the following on their official website: "The Wheel of Time is a massive, epic tale. With fourteen books’ (and more!) worth of adventure, it’s packed with favorite characters, memorable events, and heroic moments. This makes it a treasure trove for story-based game pieces — so much so that War of the Dragon needed multiple ways to show them off! "War of the Dragon starts with the adventure already underway, in a pastiche of Book 4, The Shadow Rising. The Stone of Tear has fallen, while the heroes look toward the Aiel Waste, the Two Rivers, and Tanchico for their next missions. This sets the table for the global conflict that the game represents." The fundraising campaign has now concluded, but that does mean that the project is now really ready to move into full production. Though there were some exclusives for early backers, you will still be able to get in on the fun by purchasing the game at retailers. Though the developer sensibly hasn't set a concrete release date for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, they are expecting to start shipping the game out to customers at the start of 2027. The only other thing to be aware of is that there will be associated shipping costs that vary by region, so just make sure you know how much it is where you are.
