In order to fully understand music, you need to know the giants in all genres of music. When I start to talk about the history of melodic and harmonic devices, it's helpful to know who thought of them first. Here are 5 things that you didn't know about Beethoven. The first is about his upbringing by an abusive father and musician. Even though he was harshly treated by his alcoholic father, he still developed an enduring love of music. Number two was about the question of whether or not he ever met or studied with Mozart. The third was about his developing hearing loss and the Heiligenstadt Testament, a letter to his two brothers about the pain and agony of his impending deafness. The fourth is about the famous concert of December 22, 1808 where there were premiers of four major works of the Western musical cannon. Number five discusses his late period works composed when he was completely deaf.

I did this episode because people are always asking me about my musical background I guess because I post on a pretty diverse set of topics. I tell the story of my musical training and inspiration. I'm sorry if I left anyone out. It was only because I had to edit it down. Let me know if you have any more questions or topics that you want me to cover. I have more producer/mixer videos and filmscoring videos coming out this week. Thanks for watching!! Rick

This is a Facebook Live discussion from Dec. 6, 2016 where I ask the question "Why Does Music Evoke Emotion?" This is based on a discussion I had with my kids on the way home from school about what is sad, happy or scary. Their answers were fascinating and I wanted to share them with you. I played them the cue "The Murder" from Bernard Herrmann from Psycho, Randy Newman's cue "The Claw" from Toy Story 3, "Compass and Guns" from Thomas Newman's Shawshank Redemption and a piece in E Phrygian that I had written for one of my latest videos.

This is a response to a question from one of my viewers. This doesn't have an easy answer without talking about how money is made from Publishing, Record Sales, Sound Exchange, BMI or ASCAP, Publishing, Live Performance, Crowdfunding, Youtube, Teaching, Film Scoring and Licensing. I tried to address all or most of these things with actual numbers and how it all works.

In this episode we are discussing the Concepts and Techniques of film scoring legend Howard Shore. This is Part 1 of a 2 part series. I analyze cues from The Lord of the Rings and Silence of the Lambs soundtracks. Howard is a fantastic writer and has a recognizable style in his melodic themes and harmonic language. I have almost enough material for a part 2 and 3.
