Piano prodigy Arima Kousei became well-known after winning a children's musicians competition. However, after the death of his mother, who was his biggest supporter, Kousei experiences a mental and emotional breakdown, rendering him unable to hear the sound of his own piano. Even two years after this event, Kousei, unable to touch the piano, believes his life will continue this way until he meets a girl who changes everything. Miyazono Kaori, a free-spirited violinist, helps Kousei return to his musical life and draws him into an unfamiliar style, allowing him to discover new things.
