Straightaway
Straightaway is a 26-week half-hour adventure/drama television series that aired on ABC during the 1961–1962 season, telling the story of two young men who run a garage and participate in auto racing. John Ashley and Brian Kelly portrayed race car designers Clipper Hamilton and Scott Ross, respectively. Scott designs the cars, while Clipper serves as the mechanic. Asa Maynor appeared in four episodes as Dixie. Most episodes focus on the clients who bring a race car to the Straightaway Garage. The series was initially intended to be titled “The Racers,” but the name had to be changed due to sponsor issues. Straightaway aired at 7:30 PM Eastern on Fridays, competing with CBS’s Rawhide featuring Clint Eastwood and Eric Fleming. The show was moved to Wednesdays starting January 10, 1962, for the remainder of its short run.
