The mad scientist Okabe gives up after failing to save Kurisu and buries his vibrant mad scientist persona in the dusty pages of the past. He is no longer the 'Hououin Kyouma' we know. When everything seems to return to normal, he meets Kurisu, who claims to be testing a device that stores a person's consciousness and creates a simulation with characters and personalities. Okabe begins the test and experiences unexpected tragedies brought on by the Kurisu simulation. "Zero" is a side story that contributes to making the original story possible, exploring the future of the Beta Attractor Field.
