Based in part on a toy line created by the Japanese company Bandai, the series centers on an international group of soldiers fighting to liberate the world from a scientist who controls much of the Earth's surface. It only aired for one season, totaling 65 episodes. Tonka acquired the license from Bandai and developed a different approach to the series, along with a brief toy line. Spiral Zone is recognized among fans as a series that distinguished itself from other contemporary cartoons of the 80s due to its dark narrative. The series has not been officially released on DVD by Hasbro, who acquired Tonka in the 90s, including all the copyrights to their properties.
