The film tells the story of "Nola Darling," a Black woman living in Brooklyn, played by Tracy Camilla Johns, who navigates her work and social life while involved with three very different men. There’s the polite and well-meaning Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks), the obsessive model Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell), and the still-maturing, motor-mouthed Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee). Although these three men are in love with Nola and do everything to win her over, the fiercely independent Nola rejects them all.
