Camille (Amy Adams), who spent years in a mental hospital due to self-harm, is a journalist who returns to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to investigate the murders of two young girls. Forced to return to her mother Adora's (Patricia Clarkson) side, a member of the small-town elite who has a toxic relationship with Camille and desires perfection, she will confront the childhood tragedies she has tried to erase from her memory and her spoiled stepsister Amma (Eliza Scanlen) once again.
