Known as "Toby" by his owner, Kunta Kinte is a man devoted to his freedom. He has made numerous escape plans and ultimately gives in after being crippled by slave hunters. He marries Bell (Emayatzy Corinealdi), the cook on the plantation, and they have a daughter named Kizzy (Anika Noni Rose). The heroics of Kunta Kinte, who reconnects with life, are passed down from generation to generation. His path crosses with Alex Haley (Laurence Fishburne), who lives in Tennessee, and Alex brings Kunta Kinte's name to the world. The joys and sorrows of several generations descended from him are conveyed to the audience.
