Pop Idol is a British television music competition that aired on ITV from 2001 to 2003. The show's goal was to determine the best new young pop singer in the UK through viewer voting and participation. Two series were broadcast - one in 2001-2002 and another in 2003. Pop Idol was subsequently placed on an indefinite hiatus after "Idol" judge Simon Cowell announced the launch of The X Factor in the UK in April 2004. Since then, the show has evolved into an international TV franchise, spawning numerous Idol series worldwide. Meanwhile, a legal dispute emerged with the creators of Popstars, which ultimately resulted in the exclusion of the word "Pop" from the titles of all spin-offs, such as American Idol, Australian Idol, Indonesian Idol, New Zealand Idol, Latin American Idol, and Idols.
