Perception tells the story of a highly intelligent academic with schizophrenic tendencies who assists the FBI, blending mind games into the crime genre. The series begins with the question, 'What is reality?' This question is posed by Dr. Daniel Pierce, a successful researcher with schizophrenic tendencies who turns his brain's unique functioning into an advantage in his work, to his students. What sets Pierce, the 'strange professor' of Perception, apart from others is his vastly different experiences with perception. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, Pierce's mind often plays tricks on him. The neuroscientist views the games his mind plays as signals and guidance from his subconscious, allowing him to assist the FBI in complex criminal cases while also drawing on his own subconscious for help.
