Network First
Network First is a broad documentary strand that aired on ITV in the U.K. from January 1994 to December 1997, serving as a partial replacement for First Tuesday. Unlike other documentary series on ITV like World in Action, Network First was not focused on current affairs or politics, but showcased a variety of one-off programs covering subjects such as biography, history, and science. Programs typically aired in the 22:40 slot following News at Ten, each usually lasting an hour. The strand was not "owned" by any single ITV franchise, and individual programs were contributed by various ITV companies. As a strand, Network First never became a household "name"—unlike World in Action or This Week—possibly due to its diverse subject matter. The series seems to have been quietly dropped by ITV leading up to the high-profile cancellations of both World in Action on December 7, 1998, and News at Ten on March 5, 1999.
